Homemade Silly Putty

When I worked at a day care center I learned to make this and would make it ALL THE TIME for my kids.  They LOVED it.  It is super simple and fun.  If your kids are driving you crazy, like mine are, give them this little project to work on.  Making the putty will keep them busy and then they have something to play with!

Ingredients:

2 parts white glue (Elmers seems to work the best, but any will do)

1 part liquid starch (Sta Flo in a big blue bottle at Walmart with the laundry detergents)

Liquid food coloring in any color(s) you’d like!

Instructions:

Mix all ingredients in a bowl.

Mix everything with your hands.  It will seem really watery, no worries!

Keep kneading it and you will see it begin to take shape.  It will continue to thicken and turn more goopy.  The more you knead it, the more it will turn to a “silly putty” consistency.

Store in an air tight container or ziploc bag.

End Results

You will have silly putty just like store bought.  You can use it to pick up pictures off newspaper, you can stretch it, bounce it, etc etc etc.

**BEWARE** This does not mix well with carpet, clothing, dogs, cats, etc.  If you leave it sitting out on a table for a long period of time, it will discolor the furniture.   I will get stuck in the carpet, etc.

Now, as far as thrifty, this is pretty darn cheap to make…..what’s even better?  School glue should be going on sale pretty soon!  Yep, school supplies will be going on sale in the next few weeks…you can pick up glue for normally as cheap as $0.10 a bottle!  Yay!
