It’s back-to-school time and you know what that means? Snack duty! My youngest is starting kindergarten this year and I get to bring snack the very first day! WOW! I want to do something REALLY fun for the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL! I’ve been doing some research and here are some fun ideas you can do when you are given this important task! Remember, most schools do not allow peanuts due to severe allergies, so all of these ideas are nut-free!
Fruit kabobs are easy to make and fun to eat! Just cut up pieces of fruit into bite-sized pieces and put on a skewer. To make it a littlemore fun you can cut the fruit with a cookie cutter! I did this for my daughter’s birthday before, and used melon to make stars and things. If you want a little more than just fruit, put some cheese pieces as well.
You can use strawberries, blue berries, black berries, grapes, cherries (pitted of course), pineapple, watermelon, cantaloupe, honey dew melon, mango, I mean ANYTHING! Have fun with it and make a rainbow!!
A veggie tray is always a good bet! Pair up some celery, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes, jicama or any other veggies. Add some low-fat dip and kids will love it. Even when I can’t get my kids to eat veggies normally, if I give them some ranch to dip it in, they will eat it up!
Another easy idea is a meat and cheese tray. Pair up some meats and various cheeses with crackers and the kids will love it! If you give them a little variety they may try a few and decide on a favorite. If you try different crackers they kids will love it too! My kids all love crackers with meats and cheese. It’s a great snack with lots of protein!
Pinwheels are a great, really easy snack to make! You can make them like sandwiches on a tortilla, rolling it up, jelly roll style and then cut into smaller pieces. My FAVORITE way to make them is lay a tortilla out flat, smear low-fat cream cheese all over and then place slices of very thin cut ham or turkey. Roll it up tight and then cut into thin slices. It is SO yummy! When I make it for myself and not the kids, I mix green chile in with the cream cheese before I spread it. :)
So there are some great ideas for snacks to take that will be nut free, healthy and everyone should love! Do you have other ideas? What are your favorite snacks to send to the class?
