Glitter is an amazing thing.  It makes everything beautiful. The bad thing about glitter is…it gets everywhere.  Here is my definition of glitter:

Yep, I said it.  Glitter is the herpes of crafts.  It gets everywhere….you think it’s gone and BOOM it shows up again!  Not always right away, but months down the road you will find it.  As my friend Amanda from Midwestern Moms pointed out to me, regardless if your husband is home or not when you use the glitter, somehow it always ends up on him!  I have a solution!  Homemade glitter!  Still pretty, but not as sticky! It is really simple to make!  Here goes!

Supplies:

  • Salt
  • Food coloring
  • Edible shimmer
  • Pan or Sheet you can put in the oven
  • Small bowl to mix (if it has a lid it is ideal, but not necessary)
  • Small container to hold finished glitter (I used baby food jars)
Directions:
First, pour your salt into your bowl.  I used the container I am going to store it in to know how much salt to pour.

Add a few drops of food coloring.  I wanted turquoise, so I did 4 drops of blue and 1 drop of green.   You don’t need a lot of food coloring, so start with a little bit and add more if needed.

Add edible shimmer to the bowl.  You can add as much or as little as you’d like.  I added quite a bit because I love shimmer!  Remember, you can always add more, but can’t take any away if you put too much!

Mix well.  If you have a lid, just put the lid on tightly and shake, shake, shake.  If you don’t have a lid just stir very well.  Shaking does the best and is the quickest way though.

Pour onto a baking dish.  Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes or so.  You are only baking to remove the moisture…so it doesn’t take long.

Remove from oven.  Allow to cool and pour into your containers!  You are ready to go sparkle it up!

  2. Nothing like doing it yourself!

  3. I’m telling you, that comment is PURE GOLD!

  4. LOVE IT!!!! LOL… I was working with glittered ornaments last week. I was in one little area and cleaned up real good. yeah right, lol, I have glitter all over my house…

  5. This is an awesome craft idea but I’d just like to clarify that that is NOT your definition of glitter. That is a Demetri Martin joke which is at least four years old. I just wanted to clarify the ownership of this intellectual property. Cheers!

  6. akp, never even saw it called that before…it was a joke between my friends and I….so that’s funny…regardless of where it comes from…it is only the truth. I have never even heard of Demetri Martin before…no idea who that is..had to google him. lol

  7. Love it. I have eczema on my hands and one of the things that kills my hands is glitter. Can never have glitter fun when my hands are messed up. Does it discolor over time?

  8. I had no idea I could make my own glitter! I love the color too. Thanks. Pinned it!
