When I was a kid, I remember going to my friends houses and seeing shelves and shelves of VHS videos. It was amazing to look through the covers and figure out which movie we wanted to watch that day…only to realize that the tape was old and didn’t work right or the VHS player would eat it. Oh the frustration! VHS was soon replaced with DVDs, which are great, but are easily scratched. I don’t know how many DVDs we have ruined because the kids took them out and put them down wrong or they dropped them..or whatever! It is all about digital now!
Walmart realizes that technology is what it is about. They are getting with the times and realizing that no one wants to have shelves of videos. They have introduced a new service called Disc-to-Digital.
Let me explain what Disc-to-Digital is….
You have your favorite movies, you know the ones you just can’t live without? Bring them into Walmart and pay a small fee. You will have access to them digitally through VUDU. To convert a movie it costs $2 per DVD to convert to standard definition, $2 to convert a Blu-ray to High Definition with Dolby Digital Plus Surround Sound (‘HDX’) or $5 to convert a DVD and upgrade to HDX. After you convert the movies, you can stream them through a VUDU-enabled devices such as iPad®, computer, Xbox 360®, PlayStation® 3, Blu-ray™ player, and HDTV.
Do you realize what this means?!? You know that movie that your kids are always asking to watch and for some reason it is NEVER in it’s box? Yep, that movie. You convert it to digital and you can watch it anytime without having to worry about the disappearing disc. Yep, for $2/$5 you just saved yourself all that crying and whining.
Know what else this means?! That favorite movie that the kids just can’t live without? Just convert it and when you are out and about, you can let them watch it without worrying about a disc! Prop open your iPad and let them watch the movie to behave while you are out somewhere. Amazing, right?
So I’m sure you are curious about the discs. What happens to them? You keep them! The associates need to see them to ensure you do in fact own the movie, then set you up with digital copy. It is that easy.
