“Fate be changed…Look inside…..Mend the bond….Torn by pride…..”
Last week my daughter and I were lucky enough to go watch the preview for the movie Brave. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but was excited to take my daughter to see the newest Disney movie.
Let me tell you a little about it…..
When the movie started, there was a short that I fell in love with. La Luna was the cutest story! I was in awe watching the adorable little boy climb up to the moon. There was no talking but quite the lesson learned. While the adults were arguing over how to handle the extra large star that they couldn’t move, the boy sat back and thought about it, eventually breaking the star down. It was so cute to watch and touched my heart.
When Brave started, I fell in love with Merida and her wild side. She reminds me of my daughter is so many ways. Merida is so cute with her red, curly hair and independent attitude. She wants to do what she wants to do and doesn’t let anyone, not even her mother, stand in her way.
“I look fine woman, let me be!”
The story follow Merida as she grows up as a princess. Her mother, the Queen has set her up to be married to one of the princes from a neighboring kingdom. Merida does not agree with this, and runs away. She takes her horse and follow the wisps, which are little lights that lead you to your fate. She meets a witch which puts on a spell to help her change her fate. What Merida doesn’t realize is, this spell will turn her mother into a bear! The majority of the movie is spent with Merida trying to figure out how to get her mother back to her normal self, and not a big ‘ol bear!
There are so many levels to this story that really hit home. It teaches girls that just because things are always done one way doesn’t mean they must continue to be that way. You can break the mold and be your own person. On the flip side, it shows the mother who realizes that she was trying to force her daughter to be just like her. She wanted her to be the Queen and proper, although that wasn’t allowing Merida to be herself. Her mother quickly found out that the way that Merida was has taught her to be independent and she will be prepared for life.
When I left the theater, I heard many of the men saying they didn’t like the story or they couldn’t believe a daughter would put a spell on their mother without knowing exactly what it would do. I beg to differ! My daughter would totally give me something without thinking if she thought it would benefit her. This story wasn’t created for men, it is the perfect story for mother/daughter time. It is a good story for both to take in and embrace.
I’m excited that Merida is the newest Disney Princess. She is so different from all of the other “normal” princess figures. She is her own person, stands up for herself and very independent. These are the things I want my daughter to embrace!
BRAVE is in theaters now! Be sure to let me know what you think when you go see it!
