“Meth Candy” over the top or just in fun?

Meth Candy

Breaking Bad is a huge hit and New Mexico loves that it is filmed here.  It is fun to watch the show and see the places we all frequent as the back drop in so many scenes.  Lately there has been a lot of buzz that we are getting more and more visitors that want to see all these places shown during the television series.  I haven’t decided if it is a good thing or bad thing.

If you haven’t seen the show, it is basically about Meth and it’s production.  Yep, it is all about a chemistry genius that uses his knowledge to create the world’s highest quality crystal meth.  So you can see why some people aren’t the most happy about it being filmed here or our boost in tourism as a result.

I don’t mind the boost in tourism.  It isn’t like people are coming here to buy meth because of the show.  They just want to see a bunch of places where the show was filmed.  I get that.  I’m fine with that.  What I’m NOT fine with is a local business selling a candy that looks like the meth in the show.

The Candylady in Old Town has been the center of controversy for years.  She sells XXX rated cakes and deserts that have caused protests by local churches in the past.  I am even okay with those.  I don’t care if you are selling obscene shaped cakes, candies or anything else.  What I do have an issue with is selling candy as “Meth Candy”.  It is simple rock candy, but it is how it is being marketed that bothers me.

Meth is a problem in our state, as with many others.  Selling a candy that resembles a drug is just wrong.  Kids will think its fun to eat the candy and say they are taking meth.  HORRIBLE!  It is displayed in the store as “Breaking Bad Candy” and sold in little baggies.  Why did she think it was okay to do that?

I understand she had made the candy for the show as a prop in the past.  I don’t know why she thought it was a good idea to sell it as that though.   I know I don’t want my kids getting their hands on a bag of “Breaking Bad Candy”.

What do you think?

WOw, I think that is taking things a bit too far. A drug candy? uhm…no! You are right, the kids see this and think that meth is no big deal. They don’t grow up getting the proper message about the drug and therefore makes it harder on them to understand why it’s not a good thing. I think she’s pushed the envelop too far on that one.

Now I had a Breaking Bad party for the recent premiere and we had blue rock candy on sticks as the obvious joke but to actually have items like that available for kids , even as a fan of the show I don’t think children should be able to purchase it.

That’s really unfortunate. I Haven’t seen the show and like you, am usually all for tourism but not the “candy” that it’s associated with. Tough call.

I would be outraged if my child got his hands on this! It is inappropriate and not in the least bit funny. It’s really sad that as a society the thought of whether this is appropriate can even enter someone’s mind. It is a matter of time till a kid brings it to school and then having meth “Candy” become cool.

I don’t think this is ok at all. Meth is not a joke. It is not ok to pretend that candy is meth a child would not know the difference and if someone walked up to them who wanted to get them addicted and said here is some candy they would just think it was the candy from the store.

I am appalled at this! That is the most horrible thing I have ever seen! Hey, my 21 year old daughter is on meth and believe me, it’s NO CANDY! And NO FUN! Her life could end! This is outrageous and something should be done!!
