My oldest son, Rob is starting Middle School this year. He is the oldest of three children, so you can imagine how insane our back to school costs are! Between supplies and clothes, we spend a HUGE amount on back to school items. I was asked to participate in Walmart’s Back-to-School Closet Challenge, asking me to see if I could buy 5 outfits for $75. I thought that was impossible, but I’m always up for a challenge, so let’s do this!
I headed to Walmart and didn’t have any idea how I could make 5 outfits for just $75! I mean, is that even possible?!
The first thing I saw was Tshirt for just $3.49 each. WOW! These are perfect because they are plain shirts, which means they are in dress code. My kids can’t have any writing or pictures on their shirts, so these worked perfect!
Five Tshirts @ $3.49 each = $17.45 (that leaves $57.55 left to spend!)
Next I saw jeans on sale for about $10 a piece, but realized that it is still REALLY hot outside. Rob will not want to wear jeans for quite some time, so we opted for jean shorts. They were only $9.99 each! We got 2 pairs to last throughout the week!
Two Jean Shorts @ $9.99 each = $19.98 (still have $37.57)
You have to have new socks and underwear for school! We got Starter socks and a package of boxer briefs to wear for the week as well…..
Socks @ $9.86 and Boxer Briefs @ $9.44 = $19.30 (that still leaves $18.27 if the $75 to spend!!)
I would have picked up a few extra pairs of shorts, but they were out of his size…that’s what I get for waiting until just a week before school starts to go shopping, right? Well, I still had money to spend, so I headed to the girls section and picked my daughter up a few things as well!
They have super cute leggings for just $4.97 each. The girls shirts were $3.47 each…..so I picked up 2 sets…one pair was even GLITTER! Everything is better with glitter!
Two pairs of leggings @ $4.97 = $9.94 and two shirts @ $3.47 each = $6.94 total of $16.88
So for a total of $73.61 I was able to buy:
(5) Shirts for my son
(2) Pairs of Jean Shorts
(1) Pack of Socks
(1) Pack of Boxer Briefs
(2) Pairs of Leggings for my daughter
(2) Shirts for my daughter
They are styling and ready for school! Check them out:
Not bad for about $75! I told some of my friends about it and they couldn’t believe it! Simply amazing!

Awesome deals. Way to go Thrifty Ninja.
My daughter has a unique shape and most traditional sizes just don’t fit her properly. She also has issues with her feet which require shoes from a specialty running store which means BIG BUCKS. Her last pair of tennis shoes were over $100 bucks.
The hardest part for me is buying items that my son will like.
The hardest part of BTS shopping for me is keeping things even for all four of my kids. My boys only want t-shirts and jeans, but I find SO MANY adorable outfits for my girls – it’s hard to narrow it down to the same amount I get my boys.
Finding shoes that fit my daughter that she likes.
Helping my friend find stuff that her kids actually like and not the stuff that we go, awe so cute they’ll love this.
Thanks for the giveaway!! =)
The hardest part of back-to-school shopping is finding shoes that fit for my granddaughter who will start 2nd grade. She has very narrow feet.
The hardest part is the fact that it gets really expensive to buy all that stuff for 3 kids.
The hardest part is getting through the crowds!
Not finding the right shoes for school,
Hardest part of B2S shopping is having very indecisive girls!
I am so impressed! You did really great for just $75! Your kids are super cute.
taking all 3 of my kids shopping at once is the difficult part
My son is going into middle school too! I’d have to say the hardest thing is finding SHOES
You got some really cute clothes at great deals!
Finding shoes and clothes that are affordable that my son likes.
