Being on the Board of Directors for the ABQ West Chamber of Commerce, I am often asked what benefit a blogger is to a business. Blogging is something that has been around for quite some time, but businesses are just realizing the benefit of working with bloggers…..especially mom bloggers. Notice I didn’t say “Mommy Bloggers”…..there is quite a controversy with that term….but we’ll talk about that later!
They give advice. They tell each other about products like they like or hate. Women love hearing from other women what works or what is a waste of time and money. A hired actor can tell me all day long that a product is fabulous, but I’m not going to believe him. If I hear from my neighbor, friend or another mom that they tried something and it worked great, I want to try it. Simple as that.
Years ago, moms started blogs to vent about the frustrations they had throughout the day. Soon they started sharing ideas, opinions and BOOM! A whole new realm of bloggers was born. Companies began to realize if they wanted women to try their products, they could give a few of these influential bloggers the product first and after they tried it, the word would spread. It was like wild fire!
I had a blogger review my product and I didn’t get a single sale!
I have heard that more than once. A blogger is not a sales person….believe me! I am the furthest thing from a sales person there is. I hate sales. I give my opinion, I share my experience and I get word out about your product. That’s my job. Your job is to sell the product. I just make sure people have heard of the product.
Think of it this way…..
Your tooth is killing you and you need a dentist. If you don’t have a regular dentist, how to do you decide where to go? You will ask your friends for recommendations or you will call the first place that comes to mind. It might be the first that comes to mind because you see their ads on television or billboards as you are driving to work, but you remember them.
Well, if you are thinking about cleaning your stove and you run to the store to grab some cleaner. You aren’t sure what is going to work, so you might ask your friends, or you will just make a decision when you get to the store. Would you be more willing to try a brand you’ve never heard of, or would you choose the bottle that you just read about working and seeing pictures of a super clean oven on a blog you read all the time. BINGO! You will go with the one that you have seen work.
So how many people are bloggers actually reaching?!?
Well, it depends on the blogger. Personally, I reach about 60,ooo unique visitors per month. That isn’t the case with every blogger, some have more traffic, some have less. I also have over 7,000 Facebook fans, nearly 7,000 followers on Google+ and just over 6,000 Twitter Followers. So, that is quite a reach and quite a few people that my articles reach.
What about when people search on Google?
My articles rank pretty well on Google. If someone searches for a business/company I’ve written about, they are sure to find my review. For example, in 2011 I wrote a review for Dollar Shave Club. I didn’t think much of it, but it was on my site. They did a big marketing video and BOOM over 1200 in one day were on my site looking at my review of that company. They went to Google and found MY review, so they came to my site to see what it was about. It has been months and still daily I have people reading that review.
In New Mexico there aren’t a TON of bloggers like there are in California or New York. If I review a business for a local company, chances are they will find my review when they search for Florist in Albuquerque, Albuquerque Spa or whatever company it is that I write for.
