There are children in our community that may not have someone to help them through a hard time. These at-risk children need someone to help them see their potential. Big Brothers Big Sisters launched a program, Latino Bigs which is geared towards the Hispanic community.
With approximately 20% of the children in Big Brothers Big Sisters program being Latino, there is a great need for Latino volunteers. Only 9% of the volunteer applications Big Brothers Big Sisters receive are from Latinos. That leaves many of our children to work with a mentor that may not be able to fully relate to them and their circumstances.
The mentoring of young children, from elementary through high school is so important in children’s lives. About 81% of the adults who had participated in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program as children say that their mentor helped them to broaden their horizons. Children that participate in the program are far less likely to skip school, use drugs and begin drinking alcohol.
We would love for you to join Big Brothers Big Sisters, Latino Bigs and Latina Mom Bloggers as we discuss the importance of mentoring. Latino Bigs will be available to answer any of your questions regarding mentorship and the panelists will be sharing their personal mentoring stories.
