For the past eight years, my husband and I have strayed away from traditional bank accounts. We bought one of those prepaid cards and were happy with it. We pay $9.95/month but don’t have to worry about overdrafts and direct deposits normally show up a day before his co-workers. It was win/win.
Then I started my business.
I needed a checking account. So I signed up for one and was proud to get a custom stamp for my checks, a big book of checks and I looked professional and all ready go to. Setting up the account was a breeze since I knew the branch manager.
The first time I tried to cash a check they told me it would be days before my check was available. I needed to pay rent, so that really wouldn’t work. I had to pay rent late and get charged an extra $50! Ugh!
The next time I went to deposit a check and they said it wouldn’t be available for about a week. Uuumm…no. I was so mad. They ended up calling my friend at the other branch, who approved it and I was good to go. Frustrating, but it was done.
The last time I went in to deposit a $28 check. Yep, just $28 and they didn’t want to accept it because it was made payable to me and not my business. I about lost it. I had already stamped the check for deposit only and she says to take it to the bank it was from to cash it, then bring that money and deposit it. I am NOT going to a bank that will charge me $5 to cash it to have to turn around and come back to deposit the $23.
How do you think it was resolved?
They had to call the other branch and talk to my friend, the branch manager to approve it. The check was for $28! Come on people!!
I wanted to tell them forget it and just close my account right then. I haven’t had a good experience yet. The perks they gave me at first were great..I mean, a really nice book of checks and a custom stamper was great but all the hassle every time I go in is not worth it. My friend’s branch isn’t close to me in any way, so I can’t just go there. Darn it!
What do I do??!?!

American banks are TERRIBLE!!!!! I could tell you horror stories of what all happened to me at all kinds of different banks. German and Swiss banks are VERY different, and about 50 years ahead technologically as well.
