What am I?!?!

See that little bitty island, Terceira?  That’s where I was born.  If you can’t tell, its a part of Portugal.  The island is teeny, but the Air Force base, Lajes is located there.  My parents moved back to the states when I was about 6 months old.  I’ve never been back, never seen anything but pictures.  I am lucky to have a friend that was stationed there, so I get to see up-to-date pictures of what it is now like.  I know it’s gorgeous and would love to visit some time…but I haven’t been there since I was 6 months old!

Here’s the debate:

I say I am half Mexican, half whatever my mom is.  I’ve asked and no one as said anything other than “white”.  *sigh*  Anyway….I consider myself Mexican.  Most of my life I was in New Mexico, my dad is Mexican…so I’m Mexican, right?

My husband disagrees.

He says because I was born in Portugal that I’m Portuguese.  I say I’m not because I was (a) not born to Portuguese parents and (b) was born on an American base….along with (c) having a Certificate of Live Birth Abroad from the United States.

My husband did some research and if I would have chosen, before I was 18 years old I could have chosen to have dual-citizenship.  I guess Terceira is actually Portuguese land and the Air Force is just borrowing it.

So, am I Portuguese?  I never chose dual-citizenship.  I didn’t grow up in the area.  Neither of my parents are Portuguese. I was born on Portuguese land though.

Leave me a comment and let me know what you think!

  1. I don’t think so.

  2. you are defentely not portuguese. If neither of your parents were then neither can you be. although with your dad being mexican you are spanish american meaning that you are white with a hispanic ethic background ……..hope this helps.

    • That’s what I keep telling my husband, but he disagrees. He named someone (can’t remember who), who was born in Africa from American parents but is considered African. If I was raised there, I could understand….but I wasn’t.

  3. You! You.Are.Beautiful! Other than that it’s all just a label!!
